2010 Outstanding Teacher and Distinguished Alumni Award
2010 Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award
Lynne NakanoHBA’s Alumni Association and Office of Institutional Advancement have selected Lynne Nakano as the recipient of the
2010 Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award.
The award recognizes current and former teachers of HBA who made significant contributions to the school and its students. Nakano’s commitment to HBA and its mission through the years have been exceptional. Her dedication to the students and her faithfulness in God are inspirational.
Nakano has been a teacher at HBA for 21 years. She has a passion for teaching and her strong connections with her students remain long after they graduate. She teaches AP U.S. history, U.S. history, serves as the social studies department chairperson, and is part of the school’s curriculum team.
For the past 20 years, Nakano has also volunteered her time as the National Honor Society (NHS) advisor. With community service and leadership as key components of NHS, Nakano believes that exposing students to various service projects while at HBA will instill a desire to continue to give back to their communities after they’ve graduated.
“To be able to have a hand in shaping the people our students become, and help them discover their passions and talents—that’s what keeps me motivated,” said Nakano.

2010 Distinguished Alumni Award
Jean Omiya Nohara (’61)HBA’s Alumni Association and Office of Institutional Advancement have selected Jean Omiya Nohara (’61) as the recipient of the
2010 Distinguished Alumni Award.
The award recognizes graduates of HBA for a lifetime of outstanding achievement and for reflecting a character consistent with the ideals and values of the school. Nohara’s dedication and commitment to HBA and its mission through the years have been both exceptional and inspirational.
Nohara graduated from HBA in 1961 and has remained an active supporter of her alma mater ever since. In addition to her roles as a nurse (she was a member of the Nurses’ Club at HBA), wife and mother of two through the years, she has supported HBA as a Mainland Advisory Council (MAC) host for more than 20 years, and has been a member of The Aloha Council (TAC) for more than 15 years.
Nohara is also a former HBA parent. Her daughter, Lynne (’92), graduated from and taught at HBA. Nohara and her family attend First Baptist Church in Pearl City, where she is a deacon, chairs and is a member of several committees, and sings in the choir (she also was in HBA’s choir).
“HBA is an outreach to kids, parents and the community as a whole,” said Nohara. “It’s heartening to see it grow. It’s fun to think about the good ol’ days, but you can’t dwell on them, you have to move forward.”
The award presentation will take place at the Alumni Ho‘olaule‘a on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 6 p.m. at HBA’s elementary campus.
