The OPALA Recycled Contest was featured at the 2009 Mauka to Makai Earth Day Environmental Expo at the Waikiki Aquarium on Saturday April 11, 2009.
The sculptures for the contest had to be created from opala (Hawaiian for trash/litter). The students used plastic bottle caps, Capri Sun juice bags, newspaper, plastic bags, old hangers and a lot of hot glue to create a little girl and a recycling box that showed the “importance of earth stewardship and protecting the environment."
Generation Green consists of Riley, Jenna, Kylie, Jordyn, Jaimee, Marissa , Davis, Mackenzie, Taiga, Samantha, Esther, Megan and Talia.
Congratulations also to Melanie and Kainani for their achievements in the K-6 individual category. Melanie’s sculpture entitled “Clean Up and Make a Difference” took first place while Kainani’s sculpture entitled “Ancient Hawaii Akamai” took second place.
In addition, each of the recipients also received a cash prize to go along with their awards.
A special note of thanks goes out to Ms. Lori Young, Ms. Lindsay Morris and Mrs. Pauline Higa for their guidance and hard work with these students in this endeavor.
