Pac-Five Girls Soccer Team Defends State Championship

On Saturday, February 6th, the Pac-5 girls varsity soccer team defended their HHSAA division II state championship with a 1-0 victory over previously undefeated and top seeded Kailua High. The third seeded Wolfpack entered the tournament as the defending ILH and State Division II Champion and advanced to the final by defeating Kamehameha-Hawaii 2-1 in the quarterfinals and Kapa’a High 2-0 in the semi-finals.

In each game, one goal was scored directly off of a C’era Oliveira’s throw-in which went all the way to the penalty area fronting the net. Ashley Haruki also scored a goal in the semi-final win.

It is Pac-5’s third division II state soccer crown in three tries as the program also won in 2007 and 2009 (Pac-5 was classified as division I in 2008).

HBA representatives on the soccer team were seniors Michelle Chinen and Oliveira, and juniors Tiffany McCue, Rebecca Yonashiro, Rachel Yonashiro and Haruki.  Oliveira and Haruki were both named to the State All-Tournament Team.

Pac-Five Girls Paddling Claims 1st State Championship

On Friday, February 5th, the Wolfpack girls canoe paddlers made history by participating in their first division I state championship at Keehi Lagoon. Then they advanced to the finals and won the championship race in this inaugural appearance for the program. The win was a major upset as Pac-5 earned their berth into the state championships only as the third place team from the ILH (behind Kamehameha and Punahou).

HBA representatives on the winning 8-person crew were seniors Alyssa Rodeheaver-Nojima and Nicole Faildo. In all, 22 HBA students participated on the various girls and boys teams in the Pac-5 paddling program this season.

Boys and Girls Intermediate Tennis Teams Win ILH Championships

The HBA boys and girls intermediate tennis teams each won their respective ILH Division II Title this season. While the girls have won numerous titles – including defending their 2009 championship – this was the first championship for the boys program that anyone can remember.

Included in the girls 10-3 record were victories over Kamehameha, Iolani and Punahou.  It is believed that the victory over the Buffanblu is the first-ever for HBA…at any level of tennis. On the boys side, they defeated Iolani – also a first for their program – on their way to an 8-4 final record.

Girls team members were seventh graders Breanna Aweau, Ashley Ishimura, Joyce Lee, Amelia McKenzie, Danielle Toda, Sarah Yoo, eighth graders Jasmine Berndt, Kelly Howell, Vivian Kuo, Amanda Lac, Kelsey Nakanishi, Alyssa Okamura, Kara Peck, Zoe Wang, Bryn Yasui, Amanda Yee and freshmen Kelsie Ching, Annette Douagphoumy, Kallie Gustafson, Nyckolle Lucuab, and Kimberly Matsui

Boys team members were seventh graders Jared Chun, Sean Inouye, Jeffrey Liang, Dylan-John Loo, Adrian Low, Gavin Low, Tyler Yamashiro, eighth graders Michael Burton, Shane Goo, Kyle Kadomoto, John-Paul Moreland, Matthew Saiki, Darin Sasaki, Joseph Sivongxay, Warren Wakuzawa and freshman James Yang.

Congratulations to all of our intermediate tennis players and to girls coaches Wayne Sasaki and Tammy Yamauchi and boys coaches Dan Corbin and Brian Oshima!

Swimmers, Wrestlers, Girls Varsity Basketball Qualify for States

Four HBA athletes qualified for the HHSAA State Swimming Championships that were held on the campus of Kamehameha-Hawaii (Big Island) February 19th and 20th. They were freshman Natsuko Muranaka, sophomore Tyra Ippongi, junior Rachel Wong and senior Chelsea Chan. Muranaka took sixth place individually in the 200-yd free (1:59.32) and was the third place medalist in the 500-yd free (5:13.43).

Representing HBA at the HHSAA State Wrestling Championships were sophomores Rick Viveiros and Kayla Mishima, and juniors Brendon Oshita, Micah Nakamura and Ryan Leonardo. No one medaled, but Viveiros and Mishima did win multiple matches.

The HBA girls varsity basketball team qualified for the HHSAA State Basketball Tourney for the second consecutive year. The team qualified as the ILH’s third place team and finished with an overall record of 10-7. Team members were sophomores Amber Au, Natasha Travens, Jennifer Uehara, Kimberly Au, Rebecca Dang and Chazley Baitlon (manager), juniors Reana Lee, Jami-Lynn Grumling, Kayla Yamamoto, and Jordin Ramos and seniors Jennifer Young, Lindsay Strach, Stefany Baker, Jamie Iha, and Remi Yasui. The team was coached by Keith Sugiura (HBA, ’90), Robin Yamaguchi (HBA, ’77), HBA math teacher Ross Mukai, Arjay Gruspe and HBA Christian Ministries Assistant Director Tara Gruspe.

Congratulations to these HBA participants for qualifying for their respective state tourney!

Boys Varsity Basketball Team Finishes 1 Win Short of State Tourney

As the defending ILH Division II Champion, the HBA boys varsity basketball team began this season with the loss of six players to graduation and 6'4" senior who elected not to play.

The team also had fresh faces on the sidelines in new coaches George Weeks (head coach), Kurt Johnson and Dennis Silva. Weeks, former girls varsity coach at Kalani High and boys varsity coach at Menlo High (CA), installed a new system of pressure defense and a fast, 3-point shooting offense.  The team struggled to adjust to the system and to their new roles on the team. In a vastly improved ILH Division II, which was the most competitive it has ever been, this collectively led to a 3-8 start.

But the team came together and made great run late in the season winning five of their final six games to finish just one win shy of its 5th consecutive state tourney berth. They defeated Island Pacific 62-57 in the ILH tourney quarter-finals then held off Hanalani 68-67 in the semi-finals before falling to Academy of the Pacific 66-59 in the championship.  Their final record was 8-10.

15th Annual HBA Eagle Hoop Camp

HBA’s annual youth basketball camp is scheduled for June 8-11, 2010 at the Dan Liu Gymnasium on the HBA Stan Sagert Campus.  The camp is open to all boys and girls from all schools entering grades 4-12 in the forthcoming school year.  The lead coaches will once again be former UH-Hilo Head Men’s Coach and Adidas ABC Camp Coach Jimmy Yagi and former UH-Hilo All-Star point guard and current sports editor of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald Bill O’Rear.

» We will again be including older players as the camp had been limited to younger players (up through grades 8 or 9) in the past few years. We are still in the process of determining the exact format and schedule. Once we finalize plans, the application will be available on our school website (see information below)

13th Annual HBA Athletic Booster Club Golf Tourney at Mid-Pac Country Club

The annual HBA ABC tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 21, 2010 at the exclusive Mid-Pacific Country Club. This fundraising tournament, all proceeds of which go to the athletic department, is one of the most popular each year on Oahu. The tournament has sold out eight of the past nine years so sign up as soon as possible!

Applications for the Hoop Camp and Golf Tournament will be posted at the school website (www.hba.net) in the coming weeks. All of the spring schedules and latest athletics news is also posted on our award-winning website. Once on the site’s homepage, you need to click on “Student Life”, then scroll down to “Athletics”.
