Dear HBA ohana:

Our only child, Danelle Miyamoto is a 1999 graduate of HBA, where she excelled in academics, as well as in girls’ wrestling. She was the first female from Pac 5 to win the individual Girls’ State Wrestling Championship from HBA in 1999. Since then, the program for girls has grown to an astonishing success thanks to dedicated coaches.

With a competitive spirit and solid teaching from HBA, along with strong family and religious values, my daughter is a “perfect” example of how someone with no God-given talent in sports could become what she is today. All of this has given her not only the opportunity to grow, but a strong foundation in values and principles to last a lifetime.

While attending Oregon State, she decided to enroll in the Army ROTC program in her junior year. She and her friends wanted to serve their country and thus embarked on a military career after graduating from college.

As a captain in the 62nd Medical Support Brigade from Fort Lewis, Washington, Danelle served two deployments in Iraq and is presently serving our country in Afghanistan from operation officer to civil affairs officer. Her duty unfortunately prevented her from attending her class reunion last year.

For those who know Danelle, she is not one to seek individual glorification or any recognition. It is her parents who are so proud of her dedication, loyalty and faith that we are writing this in hopes that this statement will serve as an impetus to all students—the underdogs due to their athletic abilities, or those who are unsure of their future plans or goals, to take heart from Danelle’s feat and use this as encouragement in their lives.

Danelle has always told us that these principles are her driving force:

  • Instill and uphold strong Christian and family values in God, country, liberty, justice, honesty, integrity, compassion and love for one another (including your opponent or enemy).
  • Share the Lord’s blessing that you have received with others in times of depression, happiness, sorrow, and doubt.
  • Never forget to repay society for your liberty. Get involved in organizations that will nurture your growth and may affect others in need.
  • Don’t be afraid to dream. It’s free and environmentally friendly for your soul.
  • Never forget your past, honor those who came before you with reverence and go forth and serve. Become a model citizen while exemplifying the qualities of all HBA graduates.

Mahalo,

Alan and Rosemary Miyamoto
