A crowd numbering close to 250 people turned out for the event. The breakfast of fried rice, eggs, Portuguese sausage, corned beef hash, fruits, coffee and juice was free for all in attendance, courtesy of the ABC. In the mall there was a display of various items given away at past ABC events and also an athletics table with many items for sale. Among the items available for purchase were long sleeve t-shirts, dri-fit short sleeve t-shirts, pull-over wind breakers, hoodie sweatshirts, visors and collapsible umbrellas.
Guest speakers this year were new HBA Athletic Trainer Sam Lee and former University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Player Aneli Cubi-Otineru.
Lee comes to HBA after nearly 15 years of experience as an athletic trainer at Castle High. Born and raised near Chicago, Illinois, Lee has his undergraduate degree from Indiana University and masters degree from the University of Massachusetts. He and his family attend the First Presbyterian Church in Kaneohe.
Lee shared personal examples of how God continually works in his life and reveals lessons to him. He also shared how the Lord led him to HBA. He thanked the school’s administration for the opportunity to work at HBA and spoke of his plans to minister to the students and families through the healthcare he and Shannon Keen (HBA’s other new athletic trainer) hope to provide.
Cubi-Otineru, who was a UH teammate of Jayme Lee (HBA, ’05), shared her testimony of God’s provision in her life. She explained how she grew up in humble surroundings in Waimanalo and how her older sister was addicted to crystal methamphetamine. She shared about how she constantly struggled academically while at Punahou. She eventually became academically ineligible her senior year, lost her division I college scholarships, and ended up in junior college in Idaho. She also talked about her all-star career at the University of Hawaii and her one year of playing professionally in Puerto Rico and how now, due to knee problems, she faces the strong possibility that her playing days are over. She said she trusts that God has a plan for her life and she’s looking forward to whatever the future holds.
The breakfast and program ran from about 8:00-9:30 AM. Following the completion of the event, many of the HBA girls volleyball players posed for pictures with Cubi-Otineru.
