Risha Mishima won her first wrestling state title on Saturday by defeating Anela Santiago of Kahuku HS by a 6-4 decision in the 130 pound final. The HHSAA Wrestling State Championships were held February 29th and March 1st at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.
Coming into the tournament unseeded, Mishima defeated opponents from Roosevelt HS, Kamehameha-Hawaii, and Waianae HS to get to the title match. Although her background is in judo, she has been a quick study in wrestling. Last season, she placed third in the ILH and state in the 120-lb. class.
Mishima also won a state judo championship last Spring as a sophomore. She was the 2007 ILH Player of the Year in judo as well as the 2007 HBA Female Athlete of the Year.
