Basketball Teams Win Homecoming Games

The HBA boys and girls varsity basketball teams continued their pursuit of state tournament berths with resounding Homecoming wins on January 23rd.

The girls team defeated Lanakila Baptist 55-35 with senior guard Keline Yoshimura leading the way with 18 points.  She made five 3-pointers in the game.  Also contributing double figures in points were senior guard Narissa Fujii and sophomore guard Reana Lee (12 points apiece).  The girls improved their league record to 5-2.

In the second game, before a capacity crowd, the HBA boys team used a 16-5 second quarter to provide most of the winning margin in their 53-41 victory over Iolani.  Trailing 24-14 at halftime, the Raiders cut the deficit to 24-20 early in the third quarter and kept the game tight the rest of the way.  However, the Eagles made 8 of 11 free throws in the final quarter to pull away and secure the win.  Leading the team in scoring were senior post Kyle Barretta and junior guard Christian Morimoto (11 points apiece).  Junior swing man Ryan Leung also tallied 10 points.  Including a key victory over Word of Life on January 24th, the boys' record now stands at 5-1.

In addition to the ballgames, the evening was a great time of fellowship and celebration.  During halftime of the boys game, the 2009 Homecoming Court was introduced, the Spirit Week results were announced (the Senior Class of 2009 won the competition and was awarded the Mana Cup perpetual trophy) and the varsity cheerleaders put on a great dance and stunt routine.  The HBA Athletic Booster Club provided free chilidogs, chips, ice cream and drinks to everyone in attendance, including the visitors from Lanakila Baptist and Iolani.  The HBA Journalism Department produced a free special edition Homecoming newspaper complete with team photos, rosters and short stories, and the HBA Athletic Department provided free balloons.

Continue to follow the hoop teams as well as our other HBA student-athletes as they all complete their respective winter sports.  Contact Deren Oshiro in the athletic office if you have any questions.
