Previously, the boys qualified for states in '07 and '08. 2006 was the only year the girls made it.
The girls team took the longest, most difficult route to states by finishing in a tie for third place. They proceeded to lose a playoff for the ILH division IIs third state berth and had to win a single-elimination playoff tournament of the leagues remaining teams. In the tourney final February 20th, the girl's were able to overcome a 12 point halftime deficit to defeat Hanalani and claim the final ILH state berth. The game was televised live statewide on OC16. Seeding was announced Sunday, February 22nd. You can click on the link below for the HHSAA tournament information. The HHSAA will update this bracket daily, so you can refer back to this if you want to know where, when and against whom the team will be playing…
http://www.sportshigh.com/sports/basketball_girls/tournament/2009/bracket_d2 The girls are coached by Reid Takatsuka (HBA, '83), Robin Yamaguchi (HBA, '77), Myles Shioji (HBA, '94), Darren Wada (HBA, '87) and Kari Hayashi.
The boys, on the other hand, will enter states as the ILH champion. The team came together and continued to improve throughout the season. They overcame a tough, early-season 3-point road loss to Punahou to finish with a league record of 12-1. All other teams in the league finished with at least 2 losses. The outright ILH title is the first for the boys basketball program since 1996. The girls last won a title in 1997. Seeding for the boys state tournament will be announced March 1st and HBA will begin play as a seeded team on Thursday, March 5th.
The boys are coached by Keith Sugiura (HBA, '90), Robin Yamaguchi (HBA, '77) and Henri Aylward.
Congratulations to all of the players, parents and coaches!
