The championship was HBA's first since winning back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996.
Sugiura, who is also the assistant athletic director at HBA, lettered in both volleyball and basketball at HBA before graduating with the Class of 1990. Prior to varsity sports, he was one of the top judoka in Hawaii winning national titles in judo in multiple weight classes.
