Earlier, the team defeated Kamehameha on the road on March 17th and
lost to Punahou at home on Spike Nite March 20th.
The
victory over the Raiders is believed to be the Eagles' first since 2000
and is particularly significant as Iolani came into the match as the
number one team in the state according to the Honolulu Advertiser and
Star-Bulletin Top-10 polls. Iolani was also coming in fresh off a big
win over previous number one Punahou on April 9th. Punahou had been
ranked first in the country according to the ESPN RISE Fab-50 poll
prior to their loss to the Raiders.
With a
victory tonight at Hanalani, HBA will finish the ILH first round of
play tied for first place with Punahou with a 11-1 record. The ILH
plays an integrated round robin schedule for its first round (all teams
play each other regardless of classification) and a divisional round
robin schedule for its second round (separate division I and II
schedules). There will be no playoff for first place, though, as
Punahou is division I and HBA is division II. Both schools will claim
their respective first round titles and state berths with wins tonight.
