The Math Bowl, which began in 1978, is a highly competitive event in which schools attempt to earn the most points by answering correctly a series of questions covering a wide spectrum of mathematics topics. Through eight intense rounds, teams score varying amounts of points based on the difficulty of the problems. The competition was held at BYU-Hawaii in Laie.
This year’s team is comprised of both veteran and new members. They are: Seniors
Kelsey Abe,
Alyssa Imai, and
Charisse Ongie; junior
Jonathan Harada; and sophomores
Kalsi Kwan and
Aimee Uyehara. Abe, Imai, and Ongie made up the official three-member scoring team for HBA. These students were involved in the Oahu Mathematics League (OML) throughout the year and dedicated extra time to preparing for the Math Bowl, which runs separately from OML. They are coached by math teachers Cameron Taketa, Ross Mukai, Pat Ota, Brad Shimizu, and Alan Yeh.
HBA has now won the championship in the small schools division seven times, the first of which was in 1978.
