Boys Volleyball Defends State Title
For the second consecutive year, the boys varsity volleyball teams of Hawaii Baptist Academy and Hilo High School met in the title match of the HHSAA Division II Volleyball State Championships.
And
for the second straight year, the Eagles prevailed over the Vikings.
HBA defeated Hilo 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 at McKinley High's Student
Council Gymnasium May 16th. Named to the all-tournament team were
hitters Ryan Leung and Branden Kaneshiro and setter Matthew Lui.
Leung, a junior, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The
victory completed a wonderful 19-1 campaign that included not just
another ILH Division II Championship, but also victories over Division
I schools like Kamehameha and Iolani. In fact, HBA defeated all other
Division I schools this season except for Punahou. The Eagles' lone
loss was a hard fought 1-2 match on Spike Nite back on March 20th.
HBA
was ranked #2 in the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin
state top-10 polls much of the season and checked in at #7 nationally
in this past week's ESPN Rise Fab-50 boys volleyball poll (Punahou was
ranked #3, HBA #7, Kamehameha #9, Iolani #16 and Roosevelt #19).
Congratulations go out to head coach Teoni Obrey, the assistant coaches and to all the players for a job well done.
