HBA Begins FCA Huddle Group

A group of senior athletes has helped initiate a Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle at HBA

Fca

The purpose of the group is to provide senior high athletes opportunities to regularly meet with each other to fellowship, study the bible and encourage peer accountability.  The goals are to have each member grow in their spiritual walk with Christ or to seek after a relationship with Him.

The members of the Class of 2009 who are serving as huddle leaders are Ellison Iseri (basketball, volleyball), Robbie Mun (football, volleyball), Mari Tadaki (tennis), Catherine Nakamura (swimming, water polo), Tatum Tokuda (softball, bowling), and Keline Yoshimura (basketball, volleyball).

The FCA huddle group is entirely student led.  However, administrative oversight is being provided by Athletic Director Deren Oshiro and Vice Principal Nolan Namba.

The HBA huddle welcomed guest speakers Jacob Patek and Barrett Awai to its first big meeting on September 15.  A group of about 45 students got together in the gym to enjoy a pizza lunch and listen to the testimonies of the two former football stars.  Patek, the starting safety on the 2007 Hawaii warrior football team that won the WAC title and went to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, shared how he grew up in a Christian home, fell away from the Lord late in high school and as a junior college player in Texas, then recommitted his life to Christ the past three years while here in Hawaii.  Awai is a 1988 Kamehameha graduate who went on to star at Brigham Young University as an All-WAC linebacker.  He detailed his struggles with alcohol, among other vices, and how God saw him through those empty times to where he is today; happily married with a family and the current Hawaii director of FCA.

The HBA FCA huddle plans to meet every other Monday lunch period in the gym.  Pizza lunch is $2 per person.  If you know of any high school student-athlete who might be interested in attending, please have them contact one of the student leaders, Mr. Oshiro or Mr. Namba.  All walk-ups are welcome.
