HBA Claims ILH Titles in Bowling, Volleyball, Tennis and Cross Country

For HBA, the Fall Season has traditionally been the season of highest student participation in interscholastic athletics

With over 35% of the middle-high school student population participating in a Fall Sport this year, ’08-’09 is no exception.

While the focus for HBA is always on competing with integrity and sportsmanship and getting the most out of one’s abilities, several HBA teams and individuals have also made championship marks in various sports.

Bowling

The HBA bowling program has once again swept all four ILH bowling titles – JV boys and girls, varsity boys and girls.   Strangely, the league this year decided to classify teams despite the absence of separate classified state championships.  As a result, HBA’s four championships are division II titles.  However, three of the four teams finished in first place outright, ahead of all other schools including the division I champions.  The lone exception was the varsity girls which finished just one game out of first place overall.

The Eagle boys will seek to win their third consecutive state championship at the HHSAA State Championships October 30th-31st at the Lihue Bowling Center on Kauai.  The Eagle girls also qualified as a team and will participate as well.

Volleyball

HBA’s varsity girls volleyball team clinched its second consecutive ILH division II championship with 25-20, 26-24, 25-17 over Word of Life on October 25th.  The defending state champion Eagles, which finished with a 16-2 record, will now prepare for the HHSAA State Championships November 5th-8th.  The first three days will be at high school sites, while the final day will be at the UH Stan Sheriff Center.

For the second time in four years, HBA fielded two junior varsity teams, one each in division I and II.  The division I team did well in defeating Punahou Gold and sweeping Iolani’s Black and Red teams.  The division II team went all the way, winning the championship on October 17th to finish with an 11-1 record.

Tennis

The HBA girls junior varsity tennis team also got into the championship discussion by defeating Mid-Pacific 4-1 at the Owls’ home courts on October 24th to claim the ILH division II title.  The girls were impressive all season long with narrow 2-3 losses to Iolani and twice to Punahou.  The HBA boys also enjoyed their best JV campaign recently by climbing to within one match of playing for a division II title of its own.

Cross Country

Senior Matt Nakamoto defended his ILH boys cross country championship at the Central Oahu Regional Park on October 25th, finishing with a time of 16:45.95 over the three-mile course.  He outraced his opponents through the rain and mud and will now lead a strong contingent of HBA runners at the HHSAA State Championships October 31st at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Kamuela on the Big Island.

Juniors Tia Nakashima and Chelsea Chan finished in 14th and 17th place, respectively, to lead the Eagle girls to a fourth place finish.  HBA’s boys also had a solid team showing finishing fourth as well.
