Pac-5 Upsets Punahou, Then Wins TV Game
Following the lead of their baseball counterparts, the Pac-5 girls varsity softball team made a winning appearance on statewide television April 17th by defeating the Maryknoll Spartans 5-1.
The game – played at the Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park and televised live by OC16 – came a week after the Pac-5 baseball team also defeated Maryknoll in a televised game.
The Wolfpack softball team (2-8) now has won two consecutive games after going winless through their first eight games. Earlier this week Pac-5 upset Punahou 4-1 on the Buffanblu’s home field.
Pac-5 is classified as division 2 this year, so they still have an opportunity to earn the ILH’s lone berth to the HHSAA division 2 state tournament. They trail Maryknoll (3-7) – the only other division 2 team – by one game.
HBA players that started the game for Pac-5 were sophomore catcher Cassie Koja, sophomore left fielder Kylee Yamamoto, and senior designated hitter Koren Nakamura. Yamamoto got the scoring started for the Wolfpack in the third inning with a run scoring single and then continued all the way around to score on a three base error. She also singled and scored in the fifth inning.
There are 3 HBA students on the Pac-5 varsity team, 2 on the junior varsity team and 4 on the intermediate team. The seasons for the jv and intermediate teams have already been completed.
