Then, seemingly out of nowhere, they notched their first win against Punahou by a score of 4-1. The April 14th upset wasn’t just the Buffanblu’s lone blemish on their 6-1 second round record (Punahou would go on to finish runner-up in the division 1 state tourney). It sparked the team to win 8 of its final 11 games. Included in this stretch was the May 1st season-ending 5-4 win against Iolani to pull even with Maryknoll and a 6-3 playoff game victory over the Spartans on May 4th just to earn a berth to the state tournament.
In the HHSAA Division 2 State Softball Championships May 11-14, the Wolfpack won games on four consecutive days to claim the title. They defeated Aiea 5-2 in the first round, 3rd seed Konawaena 6-3 in the quarter-finals, 1st seed Kalani 6-1 in the semi-finals, then 2nd seed Waimea 5-4 in the championship final.
There were only 11 players on the regular season roster; 4 from University High, 3 from HBA, and one each from Lutheran High, Word of Life Academy, Assets School and St. Andrew’s Priory. HBA’s representatives were senior Koren Nakamura and sophomores Cassie Koja and Kylee Yamamoto.
