HBA Sweeps Homecoming Games

A huge throng of Eagle supporters showed up in black and gold at HBA’s Dan Liu Gymnasium for 2013 Homecoming

A huge throng of Eagle supporters – including many from the HBA elementary campus – showed up in black and gold at HBA’s Dan Liu Gymnasium for 2013 Homecoming on Friday, January 11. The standing room only audience of about 900 cheered and willed the girls and boys varsity basketball teams to victory. For the second consecutive year both HBA teams earned gritty wins (In 2012 the HBA girls won in double overtime and boys won in single overtime).

In the opening girls game HBA defeated Le Jardin 40-33. Leading the way for the Lady Eagles was junior guard Jenee Brown who scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Senior forward Hayley Dixon had 7 points and junior post Megan Horita and freshman point guard Stephanie Dang each contributed 6 points, respectively.

HBA (7-0) led just 18-17 at halftime, but used a solid 10-2 third quarter to take control of the game. Dixon and Brown each connected on 3-pointers in the period, while Horita made a put back, and Dang finished a drive through the key with a nice running bank shot.

Le Jardin (3-2) got no closer than 6 points the rest of the way. The Lady Bulldogs were led by the sister tandem of Kelly and Kacey Kuchenbecker who combined for 23 points. Le Jardin had entered the game having already defeated the Division 1-AA teams of Kamehameha and Punahou.

In the nightcap, the HBA boys used a game-ending 9-0 run to come from behind and edge Le Jardin 36-32. The team was led by sophomore guard BJ Hosaka’s 14 points, 12 of which came before halftime.  Junior guard/forward Jordan Kauwe followed with 9 points, while fellow junior guard Bryson Hirokawa added 6 points on two 3-pointers.

HBA (2-1) trailed 32-27 a few minutes in the fourth quarter, but used a mix of full court presses and half court traps to force Le Jardin (0-1) into turnovers. The Bulldogs were led by senior post player Juliun Perkins, who looked unstoppable at times while scoring his 12 points on a variety of post moves and mid-range shots. However, as the Eagle turned up the defensive pressure, he was unable to get the ball much in the final quarter.

Leading 33-32 with about 3 minutes remaining in the game, HBA spread the court and ran offense to kill the clock. Kauwe was fouled with 22 seconds remaining and made both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity for a 35-32 lead. After another Le Jardin turnover, junior guard Matt Kishaba made one of two free throws with 9 seconds left for the final margin.

The HBA Athletic Booster Club treated the crowd to free chili, hotdogs, rice, popsicles and drinks. At halftime of the boys game, the 2013 Homecoming Court was presented and the HBA cheerleaders performed. Also at that time it was announced that the Senior Class of 2013 had won the Spirit Week competition and claimed the Mana Cup perpetual trophy. The trophy, a gift the the Class of 2009, has been awarded the past five years and has become a coveted award for all HBA classes. The Cup was won last year by the Class of 2012, the only class to win it twice (they also won it in 2010).
