Citizenship and Community Service – The Importance of Giving Back
The spirit of “good citizenship” and service to others is more caught than taught at Hawaii Baptist Academy. Projects to help others are organized and implemented at all grade levels. Students raise money for charities, collect food and clothing for needy people, and volunteer time at a number of community organizations. Hawaii’s homeless have benefited greatly from the efforts of HBA students.
Teachers organize these activities in the early years, but students are full participants. In later years, many of the community service activities are organized and implemented by students. At the end of the school year, HBA gives awards for excellence in service, as well as athletics and academics.
At the elementary campus, students begin the day with a scripture reading, prayer, flag-raising, and Pledge of Allegiance in an all-school gathering in the courtyard. Students learn early that showing respect for the flag, one another, and school and others’ property is an expected pattern of behavior.
