From the MS Principal, Mrs. Atta:

Announcement:

Mrs. Huster and Mrs. Quek began the Reading Revolution with a contest at the 8th Grade Assembly on Friday. We will begin with the 7th graders next Friday.

Reading Revolution

Here at HBA, we are starting a Reading Revolution.

Between now and the end of the school year you could win prizes just for reading!

https://sites.google.com/a/hba.net/reading-revolution/

There are three ways to get your name in the drawing:
1.  Get caught reading - random teachers will be giving "I got caught reading" tickets throughout the week and at various times of the day.  If they catch you reading a book, a newspaper or a magazine (sorry, textbooks won't count for this) then you could get 1 ticket to enter in the drawing.  You could get caught more than once!
2.  Take a reading quiz - these quizzes are only 10 questions that ask you to find trivial details in a book (we won't be asking you to find the themes or analyze the characters). You can print the quiz ahead of time and answer as you read the book.  Turn it in to the library when you're done and if you get at least 8 out of 10 correct you get 2 tickets in the drawing.  Take as many quizzes as you want!  But be sure to actually read the book.  Click here to find the quizzes:  https://sites.google.com/a/hba.net/reading-revolution/quizzes-1
3.  Write a quiz - you can write a 10 question with answers trivia quiz for a book you have read or are currently reading (sorry, your assigned English novels don't count).  Turn it in to the library and receive 3 tickets in the drawing!  These quizzes will then be posted on the website for others to take.
There will be weekly drawings for $5.00 gift cards to Menchies, Jamba Juice, Consolidated theaters, and more!  Also, at the end of each month there will be a drawing for a $25.00 gift card to your choice of Borders, Barnes & Noble or iTunes.
To learn more about the Reading Revolution go to http://library.hba.net and click on "Join the Revolution" or ask Mrs. Quek, Mrs. Huster or Mrs. Hayashi about it.
Join the Revolution!  It starts now!

CyberSafety:
At the Friday assembly, tips on cybersafety was shared with 8th grade students. They were cautioned on the type of information they were posting online. Keeping personal information private. Also, a video from YouTube was also shown titled Online Sexual Exploitation which demonstrates the persistence of any information and pictures placed on the Internet. We will do more of these mini-sessions in the coming weeks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja8xtQNQYDQ.

HIM Conference Youth Registration: “A gift of opportunity!”
A number of paid Youth Registrations for Honolulu 2010 Hawaiian Island Ministries (HIM) Conference were donated to the Class of 2014. As of this past Friday, the 8th grade registration has closed. Each student who turned in an acceptance form has received two tickets in their Monday Folder. One is the HIM Youth Ticket and the other ticket is for admission to the David Crowder Band Worship Concert.

The opportunity to attend the conference is now open to the 7th grade class.  We have a very limited number of tickets available to share. A letter has been sent in your Monday Folder. The conference will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center from March 4th to March 6th. The deadline for acceptance form to be in to the MS Front Office is Friday, February 26, 2010 4:00 p.m.

From Admissions Director, Mrs. Lee:
Foodland's Shop for Higher Education Program started on February 10, 2010 and will continue through March 23, 2010.  This program helps schools to earn college scholarships for high school seniors across the state.  Be sure to designate HBA when shopping at Foodland to help our school earn Maika'i Points.  HBA's school code is 7521.  Thank you for your support.

From Christian Ministries, Mrs. Gruspe:
We will be having a servant group meeting on Friday during lunch in Mrs. Morihara's room.

From Supplemental Programs Director, Mrs. Yahata:
Our Summer School 2010 schedule has been posted on HBA's website.  The catalog will be online on April 5; no hardcopies will be distributed as of this year.  Registration forms will still need to be mailed or walked in.
