Scripture: “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”

From the MS Principal, Mrs. Atta:Thank you to Parent Orientation Night Volunteers:The students volunteers under the guidance of Mrs. Quek, Literacy Resource Teacher were:
Megan Horita, Kara Matsushige, Catherine Piper, Madison Sym and Sara Utsugi.
Eagles, Job Well Done! You’ve all done a great job in settling into your opening school routines. Here are a few reminders to keep the momentum going, display courtesy and thoughtfulness by doing the following:➢
Two-Tile Rule: If you sit in the hallways, please sit in a space two-tile deep and leave approximately three and a half tiles for a walking path. To keep you legs safe, please pull your outstretched legs back as people pass through the hallways. Be courteous and kind. Do this considerate action without necessitating the person walking through to ask you to pull your legs in so they may pass safely. In return as a courtesy, please acknowledge the consideration with a “thank you.” Any backpacks, folders, lunchbags etc. should be situated within the “two-tile” rule.
➢
Use of Chairs: Students are to sit on the chairs and not on the tables or chair arms. As you leave the area, please push chairs back under the tables in an orderly fashion. This makes the tables and chairs ready for others to use.
➢
All ceilings in the hallways or classrooms are not to be touched, tapped or handled. Handling or tapping ceiling tiles may cause injury to your eyes etc. If ceiling tiles are askew, please inform one of the teachers or the Front Office. If you disregard this warning, you will receive a demerit and/or detention with a call to your parents. Your parents may be assessed a replacement charge for damaged tiles.
➢
Gum chewing is NOT allowed at anytime on campus. Spent gum left under tables, chairs or on floors are unsanitary practices. 1 demerit is issued and a phone call by the student to parents is required. Repeated violations of this rule will incur 2 or more demerits and will be considered insubordination. Repeated offenses may include hard labor detention on Saturdays or other non-instructional times. It is recommended you not bringing any gum at all to school.
➢
Keep valuables and large amounts of cash at home. If you must have a large amount of cash for an after-school activity, request Front Office to hold your valuables until you leave campus.
➢
Unattended Books, Backpacks, Lunches and Other Materials considered Lost & Found. Books, backpacks, lunches and other materials left anywhere unattended on campus will be collected and deposited in the Lost and Found located in the Front Office. Retrieval for lost items from the Front Office and demerits will be issued
➢
Secure your locker. Some of you have your combination/key lock in a locked position but the locker door still can be opened. Please be sure to secure your lockers and double check that the lock is latched tightly.
For Parents:
August 19th FORMS CHECKLIST: Turn in all forms to HR teacher or Front Office- PTF Order for Bentos: PTF KickOff Dinner Meeting on Friday, September 10th
- Student Handbook: Please remember to review with your child the handbook. Your signed copy must be in to your child’s homeroom teacher by Thursday, August 19th. Use of Internet: Send a written request to the Principal, if you wish your child NOT be allowed access to the Internet while in school.
- 8th Grade ESLR Survey
- 7th or 8th Grade Student Survey
Student Drop-off and Parking Community Courtesy Request: HBA’s location has limited street parking and drop-off areas. For safety reasons and community relations reasons, we would like to remind student drivers and parents of the following:
(1) Students are to be dropped off on campus and not on the Pali Highway, town-bound on-ramp, or at the stop sign mauka-bound on Nuuanu Avenue and the Wyllie Street overpass. Private driveways of homes, churches, or businesses should not be used as drop-off/pick-up points.
(2) Akamu Place and Laimi Street should not be used as “turnaround areas” to head back in the Honolulu-bound direction.
(3)
MS Campus Student Drop-Off: Please exercise caution when dropping off / picking up your child. The large yellow striped area in front of the Foyer Lanai is the designated zone for student drop off. If you need to park, use the “Visitor” stalls near the guard station or the middle school Front Office. No parking in numbered stalls. Faculty members are assigned numbered stalls and waiting for their stalls as students debark will cause traffic to back up.
(4)
Adhere to a 5 mph speed limit on school campus. This will help with safety for pedestrians crossing the parking lot and faculty parking their cars. Your help and support during school opening will set a good example of consideration and kindness for our students.
Mahalo for your cooperation! From Counselor, Ms. Okazaki:
Seventh graders: This Wednesday and Thursday, August 18 and 19, you will be taking eight multiple-choice tests—verbal reasoning, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing mechanics, writing concepts and skills, quantitative reasoning, and mathematics (part 1 and part 2). You cannot study for these tests so please do not worry about it. Get a good night’s sleep starting tonight, but especially on Tuesday and Wednesday nights!
Bring (2) no. 2 lead pencils or mechanical pencils with HB leads; a good eraser; a calculator with the four basic functions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing); a free-reading book; and a watch to pace yourself (optional). You will be able to use the calculator only on part 2 of the mathematics section, which you will take on Wednesday; you can still solve the problems without a calculator. Please do not buy a calculator just for the test!
You will be attending your Flex period after testing.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BIBLE STUDY:All Middle School students are invited to come and enjoy an awesome Bible study at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesdays in Mr. Sprankle’s room (M204). This is run by a few awesome sophomores who would love to get to know you. Hope to see you there! “Faith, Friends, & Love!” - Brandon Liu (10)
From Athletic Director, Mr. Oshiro:Looking for Sports ILH FALL Schedules?Go to
http://www.hba.net/student_life/athletics/schedules. The 2010 ILH fall sports schedules are posted on the “Athletics” page of the school website. Keep in mind that these are the entire league schedules, i.e. they list all events for all teams (not just HBA and Pac-5). Use this as a reference until a list for HBA & Pac-5 events is posted.
1.
All Students: If you intend to tryout for a fall sport, please sign up in the athletic office or middle school principal's office. Fall sports are: football, girls volleyball, bowling, boys water polo, junior varsity tennis and kayaking (air riflery is underway). Please note the tryout information flyers posted around campus and in your classrooms. This information is also posted on the athletics page of the school website. Keep in mind that Student Health Record and Athletic Handbook Agreement forms need to be submitted prior to trying out. These should be turned in to the athletic office or athletic training room. However, you may turn them in to the middle school principal's office or front office and they will be forwarded to us. You or your parents may contact me in the athletic office if you have any questions. Thanks, Mr. Oshiro
2.
All Students: If you are trying out for a fall sport that practices off campus, please check - daily - the following locations for athletics transportation information: Middle School - Bulletin board in snack bar, High School - Dry erase board outside athletic office. HBA provides one-way bus transportation for most sports on most "regular-schedule" school days. You and your parents will need to arrange your own transportation home. Thanks, Mr. Oshiro
3.
All Students: Please welcome Mr. Sam Lee to the athletic department staff! Mr. Lee is an athletic trainer who will join with Miss Shannon Keen to help provide more medical coverage for all of you who participate in sports. Take some time to stop by the athletic training room to say "hello" to both of them. Thanks, Mr. Oshiro
4.
All Students: If you participated in summer basketball, please return your jerseys to the athletic office as soon as possible. Thanks, Mr. Oshiro
