Updated July 21, 2020
Amended on July 16, 2020, the CDC face mask notice states, "It is not known if face shields provide any benefit as source control to protect others from the spray of respiratory particles. CDC does not recommend use of face shields for normal everyday activities or as a substitute for cloth face coverings.” With this clarification of their recommendation of face coverings, HBA amends their Face Coverings policy as follows:
Wearing a face mask will be required to access and to wear while on campus. A face shield may be worn with a face mask, if desired. Printed designs on masks must be HBA appropriate. Respirator masks with exhalation valves are not approved. HBA will supply one face mask for each student, faculty, and staff, and one face shield as desired.
HBA understands that facial expressions provide valuable pieces of information that helps with instruction. Therefore, faculty may opt to instruct their classes without a mask as long as the teacher uses a face shield and maintains a 6-foot distance from the nearest student. If the teacher needs to approach the student a mask will be required.
PHYSICAL DISTANCING POLICY
Updated July 7, 2020
Movement around campus will be limited and directed by personnel and signage. Assigned paths, recess/break and lunch areas are in place. Everyone is asked to follow the Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for maintaining physical distancing in classrooms and throughout campus. HBA’s Orange Impact Level Hybrid calls for a classroom minimum of 6ft physical distancing and its Yellow Impact Level follows the HDOH guideline of between 3ft to 6ft distancing. If less than 6ft, all student will be facing in one direction.
