Our goals and objectives are:

• To glorify God in all that we do (Colossians 3:23);
• to promote and build character, integrity and sportsmanship in our students;
• to teach our students to be responsible for themselves and to serve others;
• to maximize athletic opportunities for all students;
• to encourage our students to participate in multiple sports;
• to recognize student participation and achievement in athletics;
• and to develop school pride among the student body, our parents and alumni.

At HBA, we DO want to win, but we understand that winning is an outcome that is not completely under our control. Therefore, we compete to win (1 Corinthians 9:24-27), but try to keep wins and losses in perspective. We believe that God wants us to give our best efforts all of the time (Colossians 3:23-24), no matter what we are doing. He also wants us to work together with a Christ-like attitude (Philippians 2:2-5) knowing that every person is valuable and plays an important role on the team (1 Corinthians 12: 14-27). All of us at HBA -- administrators, faculty, staff, coaches, students and parents -- are on the same team working together.

Additionally, we believe that athletics can teach positive values, build self-confidence and promote a respect for others. We stress the value of effort and teamwork, and teach that good sportsmanship and team development are more important than winning. We believe that winning without honor or integrity is not truly winning. We attempt to strictly adhere to all ILH and HHSAA rules and policies, including those regarding recruitment and inducement of prospective student-athletes.

We celebrate our alumni who participate in collegiate athletics either as walk-ons or scholarship players. However, we believe that this is a by-product of our program, and it is not the focus nor is it the emphasis. The individual goals of an athlete do not take precedence over the goals of a team. Likewise, the goals of a team or specific sport program do not take precedence over the goals of the overall athletic program.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu was formed in 1909 with Punahou School, Kamehameha Schools and McKinley High School. More public and private schools joined the league and a wide variety of interscholastic sports were offered to the students, which eventually came to include sports for girls. Hawaii Baptist Academy, which joined the ILH in 1962 as its eighth member school, is proud to be a part of this organization.

In 1970, the public schools of Honolulu withdrew from the ILH and became part of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Today, the ILH comprises 21 private schools with over 7500 students participating in 21 different sports including canoe paddling, kayaking, sporter air riflery, water polo, judo, cheerleading and sailing. Athletic Directors Council (ADCILH) and Board of Principals (BOPILH) of the ILH maintain an excellent program with the well-being of the student-athlete as an emphasis.

Pac-Five was organized and began competition in the ILH in 1973. Its purpose was to give more students from the smaller member schools a chance to participate in a wider variety of sports such as football, baseball, soccer, softball, wrestling, swimming, water polo and track. This concept of combining students from smaller schools in order to compete in interscholastic athletics was the first of its kind in the nation.

The original members of Pac-Five were Mid-Pacific Institute, University High School, Hawaii Baptist Academy, Maryknoll School and Our Redeemer Lutheran School (now called Lutheran High School).

Today, in various sports, Pac-Five includes the following schools: Sacred Hearts Academy, Damien Memorial High School, Lanakila Baptist School, Assets School, Honolulu Waldorf School, Hanalani School, Le Jardin Academy, Island Pacific Academy, Pacific Buddhist Academy, Christian Academy, Hawaiian Mission Academy, Maryknoll School, Mid-Pacific Institute, Hawaii Baptist Academy, La Pietra School, St. Andrew’s Priory, St. Louis School and University Laboratory School.

On HBA's high school campus, the Dan Liu Gymnasium is considered one of the finest gymnasium facilities in the state. Among other facilities are the 1,200 sq.ft. Geiger Conditioning Center (weight-training/conditioning room), a state-of-the-art athletic training facility, and new locker room facilities. There are outdoor volleyball/basketball courts at both the middle school and the elementary campuses.

HBA has two full-time athletic trainers who serve all of the middle-high school athletes and teams through injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as education. In 2014, HBA received the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Safe Sports School 1st Team Award, which recognizes schools that provide safe athletic environments and highlights the importance of seeking the highest standards possible for the care, injury prevention and treatment for student-athletes. HBA is the first school in the state of Hawaii to receive this distinction. Nearly 250 schools nationwide have won this award.
