Kurt Murao '87

Kurt Murao entered HBA in seventh grade. Coming from a public school, and a family that didn’t emphasize religion, HBA’s faith-based community was a whole new world. It was here that Kurt opened his first Bible. He also recalls Steve Murphy and Ted Goslen, who were the Christian Activities Directors, as being important influences in his walk with the Lord. During his time at HBA, he played baseball for both HBA and Pac-5 for six years, soccer for three years, and football for PAC-5 and volleyball for a year. In his younger years he surfed a lot, but now enjoys playing the guitar.

Kurt credits HBA for giving him an excellent education and getting him ready for adulthood. “I felt I was a well-rounded person when I was ready to go out into the world.”

After HBA, Kurt graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He continued his education, receiving a juris doctorate from Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law, and a taxation master of laws from Georgetown University’s Law Center. He is currently the vice president of legal and administration and corporate secretary for Hawaiian Electric Industries. Kurt and his wife, Tracie, have three children: Skyler, Chase and Evan.

I am very honored to receive this legacy award from HBA, my alma mater. When I think about the word “legacy,” I can’t help but think about my life’s journey and the wonderful and special people that I’ve been blessed to meet along the way. My time at HBA brought many of these people into my life—from teachers and administrators who truly cared about me to my fellow classmates, many of whom I still consider my closest friends. I have also been blessed to have a wonderful family and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how much they have loved and supported me. So thank you HBA for this meaningful honor—I will always be an Eagle for life.
