Andrew & Mary Ann Young

Distinguished Service to the Community (2015)

Over the span of 40 years, Andy and Mary Ann Young have volunteered thousands of hours at HBA. They are charter members of The Aloha Council (TAC), a group of local supporters who believe and support the mission of HBA. They were also among the first MAC (Mainland Advisory Council) hosts when the MAC first began, and they continue to volunteer as hosts each year. Andy served as the PTF (Parent Teacher Fellowship) President for at least six years, where he started the school’s band. He is also known for chairing the plant booth at the school’s annual Fun Fair, and he continues to donate his beautiful, homegrown plants to the fair each year. He also volunteered for the Athletic Booster Club, was a capital campaign team leader and coached the girl’s junior varsity tennis team for eight years, winning six ILH division two championships. Mary Ann volunteered right alongside of her husband, and also worked as a substitute teacher at HBA.

Mary Ann says her favorite memory about HBA was seeing all four of their children, Michele Nakamoto ’82, Melanie Young ’83, Melissa Young ’86 and Alan Young ’89, graduate.

The Youngs have been active members at Olivet Baptist Church. Mary Ann taught Sunday School for 30 years, and Andy served in numerous capacities including deacon.

They also served at International Baptist Fellowship (IBF), ministering to international students. They have volunteered at Manoa Senior Care, visiting residents, providing rides if needed and helping with yard maintenance.

Last Christmas, Andy and Mary Ann received a special gift. Their children donated funds to HBA to have the new teacher workroom at the high school named in honor of their parents.
