Faustina Lazo

Faustina “Tina” Lazo is a living example of resiliency. She was born in the Philippines and was an only child. Her parents died at an early age, leaving her to be raised by her loving aunt and uncle as their own. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Far Eastern University in Manila, a master of religious education from the Baptist Bible Seminary in Manila, and a master of arts and science from California State University, Long Beach.

Tina started teaching at Hawaii Baptist Academy in 1968. During her 35 years as a full and part-time faculty member, teaching middle school children brought her the most joy. Ask any of her former students and they will tell you she had a great sense of humor, that she made learning memorable, and that she always cared about her students. During her time at HBA, she served in many capacities, which included being an advisor to

the National Junior Honor Society, Mind Games club, needlework club, and the handcrafts club to name a few.

“She is a woman of true faith in God. She has always had unconditional love for me and my siblings, and she continues to demonstrate Christian love and acceptance to everyone she meets,” shares daughter, Joyce (Lazo) Mickelson ’82.

Thank you for selecting me as a Legacy awardee. Behind this award God sent many caring individuals whose kindness, encouragement, support, and prayers have blessed my family, both professionally and in my spiritual life. I also thank God for my family, especially my husband who drove us to every school related activity. I am most thankful because HBA has provided our children and their families, with God’s help, lives that are committed to Christ.
