What is tax-smart giving?
Tax-smart giving refers to charitable giving strategies that may provide tax advantages while supporting Hawai‘i Baptist Academy. Examples include donor-advised funds (DAFs), gifts of appreciated stock or securities, and Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from an IRA.
-
Which tax-smart giving option is right for me?
The best option depends on your personal financial situation and philanthropic goals. We encourage you to consult your financial advisor or tax professional to determine which giving strategy is most appropriate for you.
- What is the difference between donating stock directly and giving through a donor-advised fund (DAF)?
A gift of appreciated stock is transferred directly from your brokerage account to Hawai‘i Baptist Academy. A donor-advised fund (DAF), on the other hand, is a charitable giving account that allows you to contribute assets (such as cash or appreciated stock) and recommend grants to HBA over time.
If you already have a donor-advised fund, recommending a grant is often the simplest option. If you own appreciated stock and do not have a donor-advised fund, donating the stock directly to HBA may be an effective way to support our mission while potentially receiving tax benefits. We encourage you to consult your financial advisor to determine which option is best for your circumstances.
-
Can I designate my gift to a specific fund or program?
Yes. Most tax-smart gifts may be designated to support a specific HBA fund, scholarship, program, or initiative. Please include your preferred designation when initiating your gift or notify the Office of Institutional Advancement.
-
Should I notify HBA before making a tax-smart gift?
Yes. Letting us know about your planned gift helps us identify and properly acknowledge your contribution, especially for stock transfers, donor-advised fund grants, and IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions, which may arrive without identifying information.
- Why does the stock transfer form list “HBA Scholarship” as the account name?
Hawai‘i Baptist Academy’s investment funds are held through the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention (HPBC). For operational purposes, HPBC uses “HBA Scholarship” as the account name for HBA’s investment funds, including gifts received through stock transfers.
This does not mean that your stock gift must support scholarships. Your gift can be designated to the HBA fund or purpose you choose. Please indicate your desired designation on the Stock Transfer Notification Form and notify the Office of Institutional Advancement so we can ensure your gift is properly directed and acknowledged.
If you have questions about your stock gift or its designation, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement before initiating your transfer.
-
Will I receive a charitable gift acknowledgment?
Yes. HBA will provide a written acknowledgment of your gift in accordance with IRS requirements. Depending on the type of gift, your financial institution or fund administrator may also provide documentation for your records.
-
How long does it take for my gift to be received?
Processing times vary by gift type and financial institution. Donor-advised fund grants, stock transfers, and IRA distributions may take several business days or longer to be completed. If your gift is intended for a specific deadline or campaign, please notify the Office of Institutional Advancement as early as possible.
-
Can I make a tax-smart gift to support a specific campaign or scholarship?
Yes. Tax-smart gifts may generally be designated to support HBA's current fundraising priorities, scholarships, endowments, or other approved funds. Be sure to include your designation instructions when initiating your gift.
-
Who should I contact if I have questions or need assistance?
