As an unseeded team, HBA had to win three nights in a row to reach the final. They defeated Kohala High in the opening round, Big Island Champion Konawaena in the quarterfinals, and ILH 3rd seed Damien Memorial in the semi-finals. The HBA-Damien match was highly competitive with the Eagles outlasting the Monarchs 25-15, 25-27, 15-25, 25-15, 15-6.

The Eagles battled ILH Champion Le Jardin but came up short as the Bulldogs prevailed 25-23,25-14, 22-25, 25-16. It was the third straight year that the two teams met in the championship final. HBA won in 2015 and Le Jardin won in 5 sets in 2016.
